Running from April 10 through 22, 2012, the TIFF Kids International Film Festival (formerly the Sprockets Toronto International Film Festival for Children and Youth) will celebrate 15 years as one of the most important film festivals in North America with special programming and activities for children aged 3 to 13. New for 2012 is TIFF Kids digiPlaySpace, a family-friendly interactive environment which includes interactive installations, learning-centric games, apps, new digital creative tools and hands-on production activities.  More information here

SNOWFLAKE - The White Gorilla (Copito de Nieve)
snowflake_03_smalldirector: Andrés G. Schaer, Spain. Dubbed in English.
North American Premiere

When Snowflake, a rare white gorilla, arrives at the zoo, he becomes the star attraction for both the public and the other animals—with the exception of his fellow gorillas, who view him with suspicion and disdain. With the help of Ailur, a Buddhist red panda who believes that he is the reincarnation of a black panther, Snowflake escapes the zoo and heads for the city in search of a powerful conjuror who can transform him into a “normal” gorilla. Inspired by the famous real-life Snowflake, who lived at the Barcelona Zoo in the late 1960s, this rousing adventure is an ingenious blend of computer animation and live action that addresses serious issues like animal rights, diversity and acceptance. Age recommendation 8 and up. Watch the trial.

The New Media Literacies Conference April 20, 2012 PDF Print E-mail

In a couple of weeks, the TIFF Nexus New Media Literacies Conference will be taking place at the TIFF Bell Lightbox in downtown Toronto. It is a chance to learn how the "children and youth of today – and their families, educators and content creators – exist in a drastically evolving media landscape, and explores what new skills are needed to thrive in this interactive, instant-on, internet-enabled, and mobile media ecosphere." It sounds like a neat opportunity to participate in hands-on workshops and learn SCRATCH, a new programming language used to create and share personal interactive stories, animations, games, music, and more. I feel it will also provide some great insight for teachers seeing as it will coincide with Media Literacy curriculum.

The keynote speaker will be Dr Nichole Pinkard who will shares insights into the work she and her collaborators are doing with platforms like the Digital Youth Network and institutions such as the Chicago Public Library (co-founding YOUmedia), to build new media literacy awareness and skills development for youth. Other creators, researchers and educators in attendance include Melanie McBride (Experiential Design and Gaming Environments (EDGE) Lab @ Ryerson University), Emily Treat (Games for Change New York), Carly Schuler (Joan Ganz Cooney Center), and Sara Grimes (iSchool @ the University of Toronto).
